Tuesday 5th of April 2011

The Limerick Racecourse Student Raceday in 2010 took place on the 13th April was a more than successful evening, basking under the beautiful spring sunshine the attendance, atmosphere and of course the style was a superb advertisement for racing. The crowd of 5800+ of which 90% were students from Limerick, Galway, Tralee and further afield brought together a mix of youthful exuberance and excitement combined with the thrill of racing to this wonderful racing arena. The first of the student buses began arriving at 3.30pm in anticipation of the first race at 4.55pm, with an entry fee of €5 including a bus to the racecourse and free racecard the new found racing patrons ensured their excess cash was seen to good effect in the catering, bar and betting areas. Buses awaited the gleeful punters as they departed the racecourse escorting the winners to their next port of call, the Sinbin nightclub. Advertised as a student night it is also important not to forget the other racing patrons which included the local racing contingent and of course the €5 after 5 promotion which was aimed at all the local business parks such as Raheen, Shannon and Ennis, increasing the attendance by approx 450.

On a night where five of the seven races were won by favourites, it is no wonder the students were in such voice as each victorious winner passed the post. The racecard fulfilled its purpose, having marked out the winners and with eachway value coming to the fore it was a certainly a night for the punter. On a night when each race (and on one occasion a loose horse followed on foot by the jockey) received a rapturous roar, evoking memories of a Gold Cup Race at Cheltenham, the star performance was the Dermot Weld trained Bethran who won the fillies maiden with some ease under a confident ride from Pat Smullen. As the final race concluded it was left to the SPIN Southwest DJ situated in the Munster suite to put his final touches to a thoroughly enjoyable racing evening.
