Horse racing is a hugely popular spectator sport in Limerick, a city often referred to as the Sporting Capital of Ireland. There is so much to do in Limerick apart from enjoying the Racing, which is virtually bursting with fascinating historic sights, wonderful old pubs, fashionable bars, glossy shops, smart restaurants, Fantastic Milk Market, good transport links and numerous sleeping options.

Limerick is Ireland’s third largest city; which dates back to the 9th century. Its castles, ancient walls and museums are testament to its dramatic past. There is certainly plenty of history to absorb in this fine riverside city; from the 13th Century King John’s Castle; the elegant Georgian architecture of Pery Square; St. Mary’s Cathedral, the oldest building in Limerick still in daily use, to the Hunt Museum which houses over 2,000 works of art and antiquity including pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Renoir and Picasso. Limerick is a progressive and thriving City.

In contrast, County Limerick is a place of rural charm and great beauty, with a gently undulating landscape that varies from the mountains of Ballyhoura in the Golden Vale to the Shannon Estuary. It can also boast of attractive towns like Castleconnell, Kilmallock and Adare, whose thatched cottages and mediaeval churches make it Ireland’s prettiest village. Other County gems include the outstanding Lough Gur Stone Age Centre which is home to the Grange Stone Circle, one of Ireland’s most intriguing archaeological sites and Foynes Flying Boat Museum, an absorbing museum marking the predecessor to the modern runways of Shannon Airport in Co. Clare and the home of the Irish Coffee.

A handy pocket-sized, “Let Limerick Surprise You” guide is available free of charge from all Limerick hotels and Tourist Information Office or download by clicking the above images. The Guide is invaluable to the visitor as it highlights all the best things to see and do, best places to dance, eat and drink and the best places to stay in the city centre.

Following the excitement of the races celebrate (or commiserate!) in one of Limerick’s legendary pubs. Limerick is a sports-mad city so it’s little wonder that every second pub seems to be a sporting pub, filled with atmosphere and sporting memorabilia. A few of Limerick’s more popular pubs include: Clohessy’s (Howleys Quay), Nancy Blakes (Denmark Street), Flannery’s (Denmark Street), Charlie St. George’s (Parnell Street), South’s Pub (O’Connell Avenue), Willie Sexton’s (Henry Street) and The Locke Bar (George’s Quay).
